Lumbungs
WHAT IS A LUMBUNG
A Lumbung also referred to as "Jineng", is a modified Balinese rice barn. A traditional rice barn is built on four poles, usually standing between 1½ meters and 2 meters up from ground level. The upper storage area often has a distinct omega shape created by bending flexible framing of split bamboo or nut trees to support the roof. The roof is generally covered with thatch and the sides are made of woven, split bamboo. The pole support structure beneath the raised, enclosed rice barn is open with no walls. A floor or platform is constructed of wood and bamboo about 1/2 meter above the ground. This lower platform provides a convenient, shady place for people to sit and relax. In many traditional villages, this lower sitting area is a meeting place for village residents where both business activities and social interaction commonly occur.
Modified rice barns are not modified existing rice barns. They are newly designed and fabricated structures, resembling the traditional rice barn, and designed such that they can be used as accommodation for tourists or in some cases local inhabitants. The original first designs were just high enough to accommodate a standing human being with just enough space for a queen-sized bed. Based on the success of the concept of renting them out to tourists, large lumbungs were designed and fabricated. These are the 2 story lumbungs. In this section you will find several traditionally sized Lumbungs as well as 2-story lumbungs.
